This salon in 30 Rockefeller Plaza has two functions: it is a retail flagship and it is a learning center for hair stylists to learn new techniques.
The retail area is accented on the perimeter wall, but with a large projection area in the front of the store, illumination had to be reduced to prevent washout. The main learning stage incorporated theatrical flood lights with a recessed track support. Spaced ceiling outlets allowed for power to be local to the lights, avoiding lengthy cable runs. The hair wash area was designed with color changing fixture mounted above a fabric ceiling.
With the studio’s configurable walls a flexible theatrical lighting control system had to be designed to support a myriad of different ‘rooms’.
