Matthew Tirschwell
CEO / Founder

Prior to founding Tirschwell & Co., Inc., in 1999, Matthew Tirschwell designed lighting for hospitality, healthcare, retail, residential, and government projects around the world. He has taught lighting design at the internationally known Fashion Institute of Technology, Utah State University, and Parsons School of Design. His projects have been published in Architectural Digest (USA, France), Interior Design, and Architectural Record magazines, among others.

His 25 years experience has been devoted to clean design and minimizing the impact of lighting equipment. He believes the effect must always surpass the look of the lighting. With this mantra, Matthew has completed significant commissions in interior and exterior settings, including the Sculpture Center with Maya Lin and David Hotson, the former World Trade Center Plaza, substantial residences with Peter Marino and Philippe Starck, and numerous hospitality and restaurant projects.

His education began in theatrical lighting design where he worked on both academic and professional productions in both lighting and scenery design. He obtained his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Theatrical Production Arts from Ithaca College and his Masters in Architectural Lighting Design from Parsons - The New School.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America has recognized his work by awarding him the prestigious Lumen Award for retail and restaurant projects.

He is a "never leaving Manhattan" New Yorker, living with his wife of twenty years, and two teenage daughters.

In his free time, Matthew volunteers as an emergency medical technician, and a firefighter with the Ocean Bay Park Fire Dept.

He is also the founder of EMSACCESS INC, (www.emsaccess.org) a non-profit focused on assisting volunteer ambulance agencies that operate within the five boroughs of New York City.
