The Alexander Calder Shadows Project was born from the imagination of Adam Lindemann and the Calder Foundation, exploring the impact of Calder’s work through light and shadow. This was one of our most challenging projects, requiring precise planning to determine where the shadows would fall—often necessitating light sources to be mounted unusually low, sometimes close to the floor.
The result was nothing short of breathtaking. While our expertise often lies in illuminating artwork, we rarely give such focused attention to the shadows themselves, as most pieces are wall-mounted or centrally placed in a room. In this case, lighting the art became secondary—used solely to capture and complete the rotation and rhythm of the shadows. This project invites Calder enthusiasts to reflect on the interplay between light, movement, and form—revealing new layers of meaning in his iconic mobiles.
